Reading Express Instruction
As stated in the welcome video, I had searched for years for an instructional program that was effective for all learners which led me to the work of Dr. Marnie Ginsberg. Based on a large body of reading research as well as clinical practice working with beginning and struggling readers, Dr. Ginsberg created the Reading Simplified Academy (RSA).
RSA is a Streamlined Pathway, or an instructional plan, of how to move beginning or struggling readers rapidly through the process of decoding, becoming automatic with word identification and finally fluent. The RSA model provides a step-By-step list of priorities and activities to target subsequence skills all readers need to have in order to become fluent readers.
All children who work with Reading Express will have an initial diagnostic assessment of their current reading development in the areas of phonemic awareness, phonological awareness, and sight word identification. Using the information from the assessments I is able to identify what your child’s most pressing needs are, and create a plan that targets these needs and moves your child rapidly up the reading development pathway. Ongoing formative assessment continues throughout the entire duration of your child’s progress with Reading Express.
Tutoring sessions happen minimally once a week for one hour. During these sessions your child will be working on the different subsequence reading skills that target their most pressing needs using several different RSA activities. Your child will be sent home with weekly homework that targets the current skills they are working on within their tutoring session. I know and understand that the adults in children’s lives are busy, and time is something that can be very scarce. The homework sent home will take 5-10 minutes each night to complete. Your child’s reading progress is directly linked to their practice of the different essential reading skills sent home!
The RSA activities used at Reading Express help children learn different reading skills simultaneously during each activity. Below is a summary of the primary activities used at Reading Express.
